BJP targets government over Himcare and Sahara schemes; Congress hits back over inflation, unemployment and corruption

The Himachal Pradesh Assembly’s Monsoon Session witnessed another political face off on its fourth day on Tuesday, with the ruling Congress and Opposition BJP staging separate protests outside the House before proceedings began and raising slogans against each other.

The opposition, led by leader of opposition Jai Ram Thakur, targeted the Congress government over the Himcare and Sahara schemes. BJP leaders alleged that the schemes had been weakened or discontinued, adversely affecting the state’s healthcare system and depriving poor and needy people of free medical treatment.

Jai Ram Thakur said the Himcare scheme was known across the state and had provided free healthcare benefits to lakhs of Himachalis. He alleged that the government was shutting down the scheme and depriving people of essential healthcare facilities.

Taking a dig at the ruling party’s protest, Thakur said the Congress government should start preparing to sit in the Opposition, claiming that people will remove it from power in the coming elections.

Meanwhile, the ruling Congress staged a counter-protest under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri. The ruling party targeted the BJP over inflation, corruption and other issues.

Agnihotri accused the Opposition of diverting public attention from pressing issues concerning the country and the state. He said the BJP should raise issues such as rising inflation and unemployment instead of staging protests to shift focus from these matters.

The Deputy Chief Minister also claimed that the Congress would contest the upcoming elections with full strength and urged the opposition to stop dreaming of returning to power.

With both sides continuing their political protests and sloganeering, tensions remained high outside the Assembly on the fourth day of the Monsoon Session. The confrontation between the ruling party and the Opposition is expected to continue during the remaining days of the session.
