A parliamentary panel will meet today to examine how the ongoing West Asia crisis is affecting India’s maritime trade, shipping infrastructure and the safety of seafarers. The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture has summoned the Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways for discussions on the issue.

According to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, committee members will deliberate on the “implications of the West Asia crisis on India’s maritime trade, shipping infrastructure and seafarer safety”. India’s maritime trade, particularly energy shipments, has faced disruptions since the conflict escalated on 28 February, affecting vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz — a key global oil transit route.

India depends heavily on fuel imports from Gulf and West Asian nations, making the region strategically important for the country’s energy security. The conflict has also contributed to rising global crude oil prices, raising concerns over trade costs and supply stability.
