Himachal Pradesh to decide on new districts after commission report

Himachal: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister’s Principal Media Adviser Naresh Chauhan has defended the state government’s decision to constitute a commission to examine the formation of new districts, saying the final decision will be based on its report. He questioned the BJP’s opposition before the panel submits its findings.

The commission has been given six months to submit its report, according to Chauhan. He said the initiative aims to improve administrative arrangements, provide better public services and ensure more effective implementation of development schemes.

Chauhan said demands for creating new districts had been raised in different parts of Himachal Pradesh for a long time. People in various regions had sought improved administrative facilities, prompting the government to examine the issue through a formal process.

He said the commission would study all relevant aspects before recommending a course of action. The government would consider the facts and suggestions contained in its report before taking a decision, he added.

Responding to reactions from BJP leaders, Chauhan questioned why the opposition was responding strongly when the government had only constituted a commission and assigned it the task of preparing a report.

He said the panel had not yet submitted its findings, and it remained unclear which areas might require new districts or how feasible such a move would be. He argued that opposing the proposal before the assessment was complete was not appropriate.

Chauhan also asked the BJP to clarify its position on the issue. If the party did not support the formation of new districts, he said, it should state its stand openly before the public.

He accused the BJP of attempting to give the issue a political colour. According to Chauhan, the debate should focus on practical considerations and the public’s need for better administrative services rather than political opposition.

The government has not announced a final decision on creating new districts. The commission’s report is expected to provide the basis for further consideration of the proposal.
