India’s Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has appointed a three-member committee to investigate the discovery of cash at the Delhi residence of Justice Yashwant Varma in March. The move marks the first step in the process to remove the High Court judge from office. Justice Varma is currently posted at the Allahabad High Court. The committee will be chaired by Justice Aravind Kumar of the Supreme Court, and will also include Madras High Court Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and senior advocate B. Vasudeva Acharya. The decision follows the Union government’s motion in Parliament seeking Justice Varma’s impeachment. The motion, signed by 146 Members of Parliament, was accepted by Birla earlier this week.
