Dharamshala, April 18

District Kangra police have intensified efforts to curb notorious drug traffickers, with nine habitual offenders already placed behind bars in the first three months of the year and preparations underway to take strict action against ten more under the PIT NDPS provisions.

Officials said the police have stepped up operations against the spread of narcotics, regularly registering cases related to synthetic drugs and other contraband. The focus has now shifted towards taking stringent measures against repeat offenders who continue to engage in trafficking even after securing bail.

As part of this strategy, the police have begun targeting the financial networks of drug traffickers. Action is being initiated in 10 cases under the PIT NDPS Act to curb habitual offenders who have built significant assets through illegal activities. Authorities said such offenders often resume trafficking after being released from jail, contributing to the growing drug problem among youth.

According to officials, the provisions are invoked in cases involving recovery of 250 grams or more of charas or over 5 grams of synthetic drugs, particularly when an accused has multiple cases registered against them. Financial investigations have revealed that several traffickers have accumulated properties worth crores through illicit trade.

Police said the move to act under PIT NDPS has already begun showing results, as efforts continue to dismantle the economic backbone of trafficking networks. Proposals have been sent in ten cases, and approval from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs is awaited to proceed further. The district police said their priority remains strict action against habitual offenders, with continued efforts to detain and restrict those repeatedly involved in drug trafficking activities.
