Guru Tegh Bahadur Martyrdom Anniversary: Four nagar kirtans to cover 1,563 km, says Sond

Punjab’s Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister, Tarunpreet Singh Sond, has announced elaborate plans to commemorate the 350th Martyrdom Anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji with deep reverence and large-scale public participation across the state.

Sond said the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has been designated as the nodal agency to organise and coordinate the commemorative events. The highlight of the celebrations will be four grand Nagar Kirtans (religious processions) beginning on 19 November, converging at Sri Anandpur Sahib on 22 November.

Each Nagar Kirtan will originate from a different region of Punjab and neighbouring states, symbolising unity and collective devotion.

The main Nagar Kirtan will commence from Srinagar on 19 November, passing through Jammu, Pathankot, Dasuya, Hoshiarpur, Mahilpur and Garhshankar, before reaching Sri Anandpur Sahib. It will cover 544 kilometres, halting at Jammu (Nov 19), Pathankot (Nov 20) and Hoshiarpur (Nov 21).

On the Majha-Doaba route, another Nagar Kirtan will begin from Gurdaspur on 20 November, travelling through Batala, Baba Bakala, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Goindwal Sahib, Kapurthala, Kartarpur, Jalandhar, Banga and Balachaur, before culminating at Sri Anandpur Sahib. This route spans 345 kilometres, with halts in Amritsar (Nov 20) and Jalandhar (Nov 21).

The Malwa-1 route will start from Faridkot on 20 November, covering Ferozepur, Moga, Jagraon, Ludhiana, Khanna, Sirhind, Fatehgarh Sahib, Morinda, Chamkaur Sahib and Ropar. The 320-kilometre journey will halt in Ludhiana (Nov 20) and Fatehgarh Sahib (Nov 21).

Meanwhile, the Malwa-2 route will originate from Talwandi Sabo on 20 November, passing through Bathinda, Barnala, Sangrur, Patiala, Rajpura, Banur, Mohali, Kurali and Ropar, before joining the main congregation at Sri Anandpur Sahib. This 354-kilometre route will pause in Sangrur (Nov 20) and Mohali (Nov 21).

Minister Sond invited devotees from around the world to join the processions and other commemorative programmes, urging them to “pay humble tribute to Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s supreme sacrifice for the protection of faith and humanity.”

He said the events would reflect Punjab’s spiritual heritage, community spirit, and enduring devotion to the ninth Sikh Guru, who laid down his life to uphold the right to religious freedom.
