Leader of Opposition in Himachal Pradesh, Jairam Thakur, has welcomed the reduction in GST rates, saying it will directly benefit ordinary citizens by easing their financial burden and boosting market sentiment. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had fulfilled his Independence Day promise of providing relief to the public.
The Central Government has announced sweeping changes to the Goods and Services Tax (GST), reducing rates to provide relief to consumers and key sectors such as agriculture and healthcare. The GST Council has abolished the 12% and 28% tax slabs, retaining only 5% and 18%. Luxury and harmful products including pan masala, cigarettes and tobacco items will now attract a higher 40% GST rate.
The Himachal United Kisan Manch also backed the reform. Its convener, Harish Chauhan, said reduced GST on agricultural equipment, fertilisers and packaging material would provide a significant boost to farmers and horticulturists in the state.
