Ambala, June 30
A four-year-old boy fell into a 220-foot-deep open borewell in Haryana’s Ambala district on Tuesday morning, triggering a major rescue operation involving disaster response teams and the Indian Army.
The child, identified as Nirbhay, had accompanied his father to a field in Dhanaura village to bring him food. While playing nearby, he accidentally slipped into the uncovered nine-inch-wide borewell at around 6:30 a.m. local time, officials said.Authorities believe the boy is trapped around 220 feet below the surface.
The family alerted local officials soon after the incident, following which emergency teams rushed to the site.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Indian Army have been deployed, with specialised rescue equipment and heavy machinery being used to reach the child safely.
“The child had come to the field to give food to his father. While playing, the child slipped into the borewell, which is 9 inches in diameter. He is stuck at about 220 feet inside the borewell. NDRF has arrived with specialised equipment and efforts are underway to rescue him. The Army’s heavy machinery is also on the way. Every effort is being made to rescue the child safely,” Ambala Deputy Commissioner Ajay Singh Tomar said.
Hundreds of villagers have gathered near the site, anxiously following the rescue operation and hoping the child can be brought out safely.
