Former Congress leader Jagjot Singh was allegedly attacked by seven to eight assailants who opened fire on him and struck him on the head with a sharp-edged weapon in Ludhiana’s Dhollewal area. His mother, Manjit Kaur, and three-and-a-half-year-old son were inside the car during the incident.
According to Jagjot Singh, the attack took place after he had dinner with his family at the Maggi Point restaurant. He said he stepped out of his car to collect a water bottle and pay the bill when the assailants arrived and opened fire.
The victim alleged that the attackers fired five to six rounds. When he tried to escape in his car, they allegedly continued firing near its windows. He further claimed that the assailants struck his head several times with a daatar over his turban and also hit him with a pistol butt, leaving injuries near his head and eye.
Jagjot Singh managed to drive to the Civil Hospital for treatment. He claimed that bullet marks were visible inside the car and that an empty .45-bore cartridge case was found in the vehicle.
His mother, Manjit Kaur, said she panicked when she saw her son rushing towards the car. She alleged that the attackers fired near the vehicle and that she also sustained injuries.
Jagjot Singh further alleged that the same group had attacked his residence and fired shots around a year ago. Suspecting political rivalry behind the latest incident, he said he was formerly associated with the Congress but was not currently affiliated with any political party. He resides in Millerganj, works in the property sector and runs a non-governmental organisation.
The incident has been reported to the concerned police station. The motive behind the attack and the allegations made by the victim remain to be established through police investigation.
