CPI(M) protests in Shimla over Dalit boy’s suicide in Rohru

The alleged suicide of a young boy in Himachal Pradesh’s Rohru area following caste-based discrimination has sparked widespread outrage. The CPI(M) took to the streets on Monday demanding justice for the child. The CPIM leaders, along with Dalit rights organisations, staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Shimla, calling for immediate action against those responsible.  Addressing the protesters, CPIM leaders Rakesh Singha and Sanjay Chauhan condemned the incident, saying it was “deeply unfortunate that such acts of caste discrimination still occur 78 years after India’s independence.”

The leaders alleged that the boy was subjected to caste-based humiliation, which pushed him to take the extreme step. They also cited a recent incident during the Kullu Dussehra festival, where a Scheduled Caste officer was reportedly targeted by a mob. “The Constitution guarantees equality to every citizen, yet caste and regional discrimination persist in our society,” said Singha. The party has urged the state government to ensure a fair and time-bound investigation into both incidents.
