Thakur urges CM Sukhu to respect Vande Mataram in full, warning that BJP will oppose any deviation from parliamentary law in the Himachal Assembly.

Shimla, August 21

Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur criticized the Congress government over Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s remarks on singing only two verses of Vande Mataram, saying the country must be governed by the Constitution and laws passed by Parliament, not by directives of the Congress Working Committee.

Thakur said Vande Mataram, which inspired freedom fighters during India’s independence struggle, must be respected in its entirety. He accused the Congress of repeatedly disrespecting the national song for political appeasement and called the Chief Minister’s remarks “highly condemnable.” He claimed that the National Honour Prevention (Amendment) Bill, 2026, had been passed by both Houses of Parliament and received presidential assent, introducing provisions against disrespecting or disrupting the singing of Vande Mataram.

Thakur also alleged that the Congress had stopped the complete rendition of the song in 1937 to avoid upsetting the Muslim League. He said singing the full song again today represents national pride and accused Congress leaders of disrespecting national symbols. He urged Chief Minister Sukhu to understand Himachal Pradesh’s patriotic legacy and apologize for his remarks. Thakur further warned that if Vande Mataram is not sung in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly according to parliamentary law, the BJP will strongly oppose it.

He said the Assembly must function according to constitutional and legal provisions, not directives from the Congress Working Committee or the Gandhi family.
