Party leaders seek details of 18 councillors, demand their release ahead of chairperson poll

Congress workers staged a protest outside the Pinjore police station on Monday, alleging that 18 party-backed councillors travelling from Himachal Pradesh to Rajasthan’s Tijara were stopped by the Haryana Police ahead of voting for the Tijara Municipal Council chairperson.

Congress leaders demanded information about the councillors and sought their release so that they could reach Tijara to cast their votes. Reports from the area said the councillors were stopped near the Chandimandir-Surajpur toll plaza on Sunday night while returning from Himachal Pradesh.

Abhay Kumar Saini, in-charge of the Tijara Municipal Council, alleged that the group was detained near a toll plaza while returning on September 20. He said a member of the group informed the party about the detention over the phone, after which the mobile phones were switched off.

Saini said he contacted the traffic police station concerned and the Amravati police post using vehicle GPS and toll-related information, but alleged that no clear information was provided about the whereabouts of the councillors.

Saini claimed that as many as 82 people had been detained, including five women councillors, five women Congress workers, elderly persons and young people.

He alleged that the action was politically motivated and claimed that the Congress-backed councillors were in a strong position in the Tijara municipal election. He said the alleged detention could prevent them from reaching Tijara in time for the vote.

Former MLA and Congress leader Pradeep Chaudhary, along with district president Sanjay Rana and other party leaders and workers, participated in the protest.

Terming the matter unfortunate, Chaudhary said the Congress would approach the Election Commission and seek postponement of the polling. Congress leaders also demanded an impartial investigation into the alleged detention.
