Chandigarh, July 6
Senior leaders of the Punjab Congress met in Mohali on Monday, days after several party leaders backed Lok Sabha MP Charanjit Singh Channi to be reconsidered for the post of state party chief.
The meeting came after a gathering at Channi’s residence in Morinda on Friday, where several incumbent and former MLAs expressed support for his leadership. Channi today shared photographs from the latest meeting on social media with the caption, “Unity is Strength”, adding that it was a continuation of the earlier discussions.
The developments have prompted speculation about divisions within the Punjab Congress as the party prepares for the 2027 state assembly elections.
State Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring rejected suggestions of factionalism, saying the party remained united.
“We are all together,” Warring told reporters, adding that the recent meetings were aimed at strengthening the organisation rather than reflecting any internal dispute.
Senior Congress leader Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who attended both meetings, said Monday’s gathering was a continuation of the Morinda meeting but declined to elaborate further.
Several leaders who were not present at Friday’s meeting, including Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Razia Sultana, Khushaldeep Singh Dhillon and Pargat Singh, attended the Mohali meeting.
Meanwhile, Congress general secretary in charge of Punjab, Bhupesh Baghel, arrived in Chandigarh and is expected to hold discussions with party leaders on preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections.
The Punjab Congress also described the Mohali meeting as part of its election strategy, saying leaders discussed strengthening the organisation, campaign planning and upcoming programmes.
Last week, the Congress retained Raja Warring as the Punjab Congress president while appointing Channi as chairman of the party’s campaign committee. Channi had been viewed as a leading contender for the state chief’s post, and political observers believe he was disappointed after being overlooked.
Despite the speculation, Warring insisted that the party leadership would campaign together across Punjab ahead of the 2027 elections.
