The Chandigarh Police has been approved for the President’s Police Colour, one of the highest honours awarded to police forces in states and Union territories, ahead of its Raising Day on November 1.

The President approved the award late on Monday evening. The Chandigarh Chief Secretary received a letter from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the decision.

The award recognises service, discipline and dedication. It is conferred after a high-level committee assesses a police force’s work. A force can receive the honour only once.

A proposal submitted by the Union Territory cited several awards received by Chandigarh Police, including one gallantry medal, 20 President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service, 108 President’s Police Medals for Meritorious Service and 52 United Nations medals.

The force has established specialised units for security and investigation. The Operations Cell was set up in 1990 to handle counter-terrorism and respond to emergencies and terror attacks. Chandigarh Police has also established an anti-human trafficking unit and a K9 squad.

Police said the force has managed 60,501 law-and-order events since 2009. It handled 2,582 such events in 2025, with no untoward incident reported.

The Police Command and Control Centre was inaugurated on July 30, 2022. It is connected to 2,085 CCTV cameras and integrated with intelligent traffic management, adaptive traffic signals and automatic number-plate recognition.

The Cyber Operations Centre, known as CenCOPS, was established on December 12, 2023. Its work includes cyber operations, digital forensics, malware analysis, CCTV and video forensics, and cyber-threat intelligence.

A special “We Care For You” logo will be displayed above the nameplates on the uniforms of DGP Dr Sagar Preet Hooda and other Chandigarh Police personnel. The logo is reserved for forces that have received the honour. Chandigarh Police’s emergency number 112 has a response time of four minutes and 33 seconds.
