The family of slain anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota will receive CRPF X-category security after the Centre approved the protection arrangement, marking a significant development amid the ongoing investigation into his murder.
According to media reports, the decision comes against the backdrop of concerns over the family’s safety following Jhota’s killing and its continued campaign for justice. His father, Bhim Singh, and wife, Manpreet Kaur, have been actively raising their voices against the circumstances surrounding his death and demanding accountability from the authorities.
Under the approved arrangement, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will provide security to the family. X-category security is one of India’s recognised security classifications and generally involves a limited security detail, with deployment determined by the threat assessment and protection requirements of the individuals concerned.
The Centre’s approval assumes significance as the family had been seeking protection during its demonstrations and discussions with the administration. The Punjab government had also assured the family and the Insaaf Action Committee of adequate security during negotiations.
The development comes as the murder investigation progresses, with the CBI completing its initial interrogation of the four accused. The accused have subsequently been sent to 14 days of judicial custody by a CBI court in Mohali.
While the security approval addresses one of the key concerns raised by the family, its larger demand for justice remains central to the case. The family and its supporters are also seeking action against the alleged illegal distribution of psychotropic medicines, an issue that emerged as a major focus of protests following Jhota’s killing.
With the Centre approving security cover and the CBI investigation underway, the family’s protection and its demand for accountability remain two key aspects of the unfolding case.
