BJP will make Punjab drug-free by 2029 if voted to power: Amit Shah

Jalandhar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday appealed to people in Punjab to vote for the BJP, saying the party would make the state free of drugs by December 31, 2029 if voted to power. Addressing a rally in Jalandhar, Amit Shah said the BJP had delivered on commitments including tackling terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, Naxalism and militancy in the North East under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.He said the next challenge was to make Punjab drug-free.

“If you want to vote for BJP, then vote only and only for a drug-free Punjab,” Amit Shah said, while asking voters to give the party five years to deliver on its promise.

Amit Shah criticised the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab and Congress, saying successive governments had failed to address the drug problem. He alleged that the drug trade, particularly the sale of chitta, was operating openly in the state.
He also referred to his meetings with families affected by drug addiction, saying he had recently met parents who had lost their children to drugs.

Shah said the BJP’s campaign was not merely a political agenda but a campaign to save Punjab. He promised that if given the opportunity, the party would stop the sale of drugs in Punjab and prevent their movement to other states. The rally marked the conclusion of the BJP’s 13-day Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra. The four routes covered nearly 4,000km and all 117 Assembly constituencies in the state.

He said BJP national president Nitin Nabin had led the campaign across Punjab covering 117 constituencies in 13 days.
The Home Minister also highlighted Punjab’s contribution to the country, particularly its role in agriculture and national security.

He said Punjab’s farmers had repeatedly helped fill the country’s food reserves and that Punjabis had made significant sacrifices in defending India’s borders. Shah’s remarks come ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election, with the BJP making the drug issue a central part of its political campaign.
