India pocket 3 bronzes as hockey women seal Asiad title clash

Wrestler Sunil Kumar along with boxers Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya add to India’s 60-medal haul on Day 12; squash teams assure medals

India added three bronze medals to its Asian Games tally through wrestler Sunil Kumar and boxers Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya, while the country’s men’s and women’s squash teams also secured medals.

Sunil Kumar won bronze in the men’s Greco-Roman 87-kg category, becoming the first Indian wrestler to win two career Asian Games medals in the Greco-Roman discipline.

In boxing, Priya Ghanghas claimed bronze in the women’s 60-kg category after losing in the semifinal, while Kapil Pokhariya finished with bronze in the men’s 90-kg category following his semifinal defeat.

India’s men’s and women’s squash teams won their respective matches to secure medals for the country.

In women’s hockey, India defeated South Korea 2-0 in the semifinal to reach the gold-medal match. Ishika Chaudhary opened the scoring in the 44th minute before captain Salima Tete doubled the lead in the 48th minute.

India will face reigning champions China in the gold-medal match on Friday, October 2.

In boxing, Lovlina Borgohain won her 75-kg semifinal bout to advance to the gold-medal final.

In Sepaktakraw, the Indian men’s quadrant team opened its Group A campaign with a 2-0 victory over Laos. India won the two games 15-9 and 15-8. The women’s quadrant team, however, lost to Vietnam.

In tennis, Sumit Nagal advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s singles event.

In judo, Asmita Dey was eliminated in the women’s 48kg quarterfinals after losing to Kazakhstan’s Abiba Abu Zhakynova.

On Day 12, India’s medal tally stood at 60, including 10 gold, 21 silver and 29 bronze.
