The Punjab BJP on Wednesday accused Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal of using temples and Sanatan Dharma to to woo voters. Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon on Wednesday alleged that Kejriwal’s recent references to Hinduism and his announcement of a temple dedicated to Luv, Kush and Mata Janaki in Amritsar were motivated by electoral considerations rather than religious conviction.Dhillon questioned Kejriwal’s credibility, claiming the AAP leader had earlier opposed the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and therefore could not now present himself as a champion of temple development.
The remarks come days after Kejriwal described the AAP as a “true Sanatani”, saying his party had worked with devotion towards Sanatan values while accusing the BJP of using Lord Ram’s name for political purposes. During a recent visit to Punjab, he also announced plans to build a grand temple dedicated to Luv, Kush and Mata Janaki in Amritsar.
Calling the move “election-time Hinduism”, Dhillon alleged Kejriwal had adopted temple politics as Punjab prepares for Assembly elections.
The BJP leader also referred to the consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, alleging that Kejriwal stayed away from the event and instead organised a Sundarkand recital in Delhi for political reasons.
He further questioned Kejriwal’s understanding of Hindu scriptures, citing previous controversies over the AAP leader’s remarks on the Ramayana. Dhillon also challenged him to explain what his government had done during its decade in power in Delhi for the development of major Hindu temples or religious institutions.
Criticising the AAP government in Punjab, Dhillon alleged the ruling party had failed the state over the past four-and-a-half years and was now attempting to use religion to regain political ground after losing power in Delhi.
