Actor-producer Aamir Khan will attend a special screening of his acclaimed film Lagaan at the 17th edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, organizers announced on Wednesday. The screening will mark the 25th anniversary of the iconic film and officially launch this year’s festival celebrations.
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, regarded as the largest celebration of Indian cinema outside India, will be held from August 13 to August 23. A curtain-raiser event on July 9 will commemorate 25 years of Lagaan, the Ashutosh Gowariker-directed period sports drama that earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated productions.
Aamir Khan is scheduled to attend the special screening at ACMI Cinema in Melbourne as part of the anniversary celebrations.
Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange said celebrating 25 years of Lagaan was a fitting way to open the festival. She described the film as a landmark in Indian cinema that continues to inspire audiences and filmmakers across generations. She also expressed delight at welcoming Aamir Khan to Melbourne for the occasion and said the festival looks forward to presenting another memorable edition showcasing the best of Indian cinema.
Supported by the Government of Victoria, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne has evolved into a major international platform for Indian cinema. Over the years, it has hosted several prominent personalities, including Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, A. R. Rahman, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Ram Charan, Vijay Sethupathi, Vicky Kaushal, Vijay Varma and Keerthy Suresh, along with acclaimed filmmakers such as Rajkumar Hirani, Shoojit Sircar, Zoya Akhtar, Rima Das and Kabir Khan. The 17th edition of the festival will feature film screenings, premieres, conversations, masterclasses and cultural events, bringing together filmmakers, actors, industry professionals and cinema enthusiasts from around the world.
