Actor Angad Bedi fondly talks about his Punjabi roots and debut in the Punjabi film industry at an event in Chandigarh
Actor and former model Angad Bedi, who made his on-screen debut on television with short film Kaya Taran back in 2004 and the silver screen with F.A.L.T.U. in 2011 attended the Chandigarh launch event for Lionsgate Play’s Tiger TV, a new streaming service focused on Hindi and Punjabi content integrating directly into the Lionsgate Play app in India. The new entertainment destination was launched by Lionsgate Play founder Rohit Jain across 12 markets with more than 50 title premieres planned in its first year. Also present on the occasion was Punjabi actor Prince Kanwaljit Singh.
The event also unveiled the teaser of Daanav, a new Hindi crime-thriller, original series starring Angad Bedi and Pooja Gor. Introducing his crime series, Angad said, “I play a cop in the crime-thriller Daanav which features 10 different stories in which there are 10 different killers in every serial. There is a subordinate cop also. We make up a fictitious world in every story to get hold of the serial killer. This is the first time in history that we are humanising a crime show and are not making it heroic. You will see the humane side of the cop in every story. You will also see a graph of the character like where he is coming from and where he is exactly heading. We have worked really hard on this show in the sweltering heat of June and two young boys have filmed the whole series.”
Besides Daanav, Bedi will be seen in the romantic genre with ‘Ranjheya’ which is still being canned in Punjab. We wonder if it is easy for an actor to switch genres so effortlessly? “I started my career in 2016 with Ungli which was a Dharma productions film, made on a massive budget. But the film didn’t do well at the box-office and I was out of work for two years before I met Shoojit Sircar at Filmfare awards and he offered me ‘Pink’ opposite Amitabh Bachchan and the film won a National Award. I have also done a film down south titled, Hi Nanna which also fared well at the box-office. But I always had a grudge that I still haven’t worked in the Punjabi film industry and Ranjheya will be my debut in Punjabi cinema,” avers Bedi.
Also talking about his connection to Punjab, Bedi proudly says, “I come to Punjab very often. My father hails from Amritsar and we have a kothi there. I spend a lot of my time there. Ranjheya will be my official ticket to the Punjabi cinema and we still have a five-day shoot left for the film to be completed, before we wind up for the festive season and hopefully you will see me in the new year with Ranjheya.”
Talking about the appreciation an actor craves after toiling hard to fit into the shoes of a character, Bedi says, “if an actor has put in hard work, it will show through the lens of a camera and through the audience’s appreciation. I believe the audiences can pick on the energy of an actor and the kind of hard work he puts in his work. An actor’s karm shows on the screen.” he signs off.
