Ajay Singhal pays tribute to police martyrs, says state aims to be drug-free by 2029

Panchkula: Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Ajay Singhal on Wednesday said 26 gangsters and wanted persons had been deported since the formation of the state’s Special Task Force (STF), as the police continued efforts to curb organised crime and track fugitives.

Singhal was speaking to the media on the sidelines of a state-level Police Martyrs’ Day programme at the Police Lines in Panchkula, where he and senior officers paid floral tributes to personnel who died in the line of duty. A two-minute silence was observed in their memory.

The DGP said 28 police personnel had sacrificed their lives since the formation of the Haryana Police. He described the force as disciplined and committed to maintaining high standards of service.

Singhal said several initiatives had been undertaken over the past 10 months to strengthen the force and improve public engagement. More schemes were being planned under the leadership of the Chief Minister, with details to be announced soon.

On the firing incident involving actor Tiger Shroff, in which a Haryana shooter’s link had emerged, Singhal said the police had acted promptly, identified and verified associates and coordinated with the Mumbai Police.

Regarding gangster networks, he said a team had been formed to verify the activities of former criminals and assess their involvement in fresh offences. Police teams were also searching for absconding suspects.

Singhal said the police had conducted several encounters and would continue efforts to prevent gangsters operating from abroad from threatening the public.

On drug-related crime, the DGP cited Haryana’s border with Punjab as a factor contributing to the challenge. He said the state had seized commercial quantities of drugs, arrested suspects and opened de-addiction centres. The government aims to make Haryana drug-free by 2029, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah monitoring the efforts, he added.

Singhal also said a tourist police post had been opened at Mata Mansa Devi to protect visitors and their belongings during the fair. Similar posts were planned for Kurukshetra and Gurugram.
