The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Thursday paid tribute to anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota and others during obituary references. Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan said Jhota had sacrificed his life while fighting against drugs and would always be remembered for his commitment to the cause.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case in connection with Jhota’s murder and took over the investigation on October 21. A CBI team visited Mansa on Wednesday, a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Punjab.
Shah met Jhota’s family on Tuesday and assured them of a thorough investigation. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced the CBI probe on Tuesday after accepting the family’s demand for an independent investigation. Mann said the decision was taken in response to the family’s request and assured Jhota’s father, Bhim Singh, and other relatives of the government’s support.
Jhota was shot dead on October 13 during a confrontation with chemist Ashwani Kumar over the alleged sale of intoxicating medicines. The incident was livestreamed on Facebook, triggering widespread outrage. The main accused was arrested in Rajasthan along with a pistol allegedly used in the shooting. Another person was also arrested for allegedly helping him flee.
