Retired LIC manager alleges officer demanded Rs 2.5 lakh to drop his name from case
Chandigarh: The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested Inspector Gulshan Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of the Dhar Kalan police station in Pathankot district, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh, the first instalment of a Rs 2.5-lakh deal.
According to an official spokesperson, the arrest followed a complaint lodged by a retired LIC manager from Amritsar.
The complainant alleged that a quarrel took place at his younger brother’s restaurant, Madhuban, in Dhangu Sara village of Pathankot district. Both parties sustained minor injuries, following which an FIR was registered at the Dhar Kalan police station against restaurant worker Krishna and three unidentified persons. The complainant was also named as a suspicious person in the case.
He alleged that Inspector Gulshan Kumar initially demanded Rs 5 lakh to drop his name from the case. The amount was later settled at Rs 2.5 lakh, payable in instalments, with Rs 1 lakh fixed as the first instalment. The complainant reportedly recorded the conversation regarding the alleged bribe demand.
Unwilling to pay, the complainant approached the VB Range in Amritsar. Acting on his complaint, the VB Unit in Pathankot laid a trap and arrested the inspector while he was allegedly accepting Rs 1 lakh in the presence of two official witnesses. The tainted currency was recovered.
