Dispute emerges after Alex Gibney’s documentary on Musk premiered in Venice

Elon Musk’s former partner Ashley St Clair has claimed she was offered  40 million dollars to remain silent about their relationship, as reported by The Guardian. A claim the billionaire has denied, accusing her of making false statements in a response posted on X.

St Clair made the allegation while speaking at the Venice Film Festival during the premiere of filmmaker Alex Gibney’s documentary Musk, which examines the Tesla and SpaceX chief’s personal life, business career and growing political influence.

“I was offered the opportunity not to speak for 40 million dollars,” St Clair said at a press conference ahead of the documentary’s premiere. She said the offer prompted her to consider the value of speaking publicly and ultimately decided against signing the alleged non-disclosure agreement.

St Clair, who shares a child with Musk, said she wanted to set an example for her children by choosing to speak about her experiences rather than prioritising financial comfort. She also claimed Musk had told her he needed a “legion of children before the civil war”.

She further criticised Musk’s use of X, saying she believed he was “stoking fires” and contributing to deliberate social division that could have serious consequences if not regulated or contained. These remarks formed part of the documentary’s wider examination of Musk’s influence through the social media platform.

Musk rejected the 40 million dollars claim on September 9 after TMZ posted about St Clair’s comments on X.

“She was never offered that and has a history of making false claims,” Musk wrote in his response.

The dispute comes as Gibney’s nearly four-hour documentary places renewed focus on Musk’s personal relationships alongside his career as one of the world’s most prominent technology entrepreneurs. Musk did not participate in the documentary and has criticised Gibney, describing the film as a “hit piece” and accusing the filmmaker of having “zero integrity”.

Musk, 55, was born in Pretoria, South Africa, and later studied at Queen’s University in Canada before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied physics and business. He briefly entered a graduate programme at Stanford University before leaving to pursue internet ventures.

His early businesses included Zip2 and X.com, which later became part of PayPal. He subsequently founded SpaceX and became a leading figure at Tesla, while expanding his interests into artificial intelligence, brain-computer interfaces, social media and robotics.

SpaceX is pursuing reusable rocket technology and Musk’s long-term ambition of establishing a human presence on Mars. Tesla has expanded beyond electric vehicles into battery storage, artificial intelligence and humanoid robotics. Musk is also associated with Neuralink, xAI and The Boring Company.

His stated long-term ambitions include advancing artificial intelligence, developing humanoid robots, expanding human activity beyond Earth, and creating technologies he believes could reshape transportation, energy, and human-computer interaction.

The Venice documentary has therefore brought together two sides of Musk’s public profile — his extraordinary technological ambitions and continuing controversy surrounding his personal relationships, political influence and use of X.
