Actor says Janmashtami celebrations in Mumbai remain close to his heart

Actor Akshay Mhatre, who plays Girdhar in Humari Radha, has recalled his childhood memories of celebrating Janmashtami and participating in Dahi Handi festivities during his early years in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar.

Anmol TV, the free-to-air Hindi general entertainment channel from Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL), is currently adding a festive element to its original fiction show Humari Radha through a Janmashtami storyline.

In the ongoing track, Radha, played by Simran Kaur, welcomes Laddu Gopal and prepares for the puja at her house. Shanaya, portrayed by Vaidehi Nair, becomes upset after Gary is unable to take her out and ends up spoiling the sacred footprints created for Laddu Gopal. Her attempt takes an unexpected turn when she accidentally falls into gobar. Kian, dressed as Kanha, later recreates the footprints and restores the sanctity of the celebration.

Reflecting on the festival, Mhatre said his upbringing in Maharashtra gave him a strong connection with Janmashtami and Dahi Handi celebrations.

“Being born and brought up in Maharashtra, Janmashtami has always held a very special place in my heart,” Mhatre said. He recalled spending his early years in a chawl in Ghatkopar, where he and his friends would attend Dahi Handi events, cheer from the sidelines and participate in breaking handis.

He said his parents encouraged him to take part in the festivities and would accompany him to Dahi Handi events during his childhood. He continued the tradition during his college years.

For Mhatre, Janmashtami represents community spirit, festive energy and the joy of celebrating together. He said the festival continues to bring back fond childhood memories while also offering an opportunity to reflect on Lord Krishna’s teachings and their relevance in everyday life.
