Police are monitoring traffic violations as thousands of Punjab devotees visit Kangra’s Shakti Peeths, with congestion reported in key areas.

Dharamshala, August 20

Thousands of devotees from Punjab are entering Kangra district on motorcycles to visit the Shakti Peeths, leading to increased traffic and congestion in Kangra and McLeodganj.

Kangra Superintendent of Police Kulbhushan Verma said around 1,500 to 2,000 bikers entered the district the previous day. The large number of motorcycles led to traffic jams in McLeodganj and Kangra city.

Police are monitoring traffic violations and taking action under the Motor Vehicles Act. Awareness efforts are also being carried out, along with the issuance of challans against violators.

The influx of bikers has increased crowds at major religious and tourist destinations. Police have also raised concerns over violations such as triple riding, overspeeding and the use of flags on motorcycles.

Verma said some stretches of the McLeodganj Road and the Kangra-Samela main road have been damaged due to rain, with repair work under way. This has also affected traffic movement.

Additional police personnel are being deployed to manage congestion and maintain smooth traffic flow. Verma said the road-related issue had also been raised with the Public Works Department for an early resolution.

Police have appealed to bikers to follow traffic rules, avoid overspeeding and triple riding, and drive safely.
