Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has ruled out the possibility of an alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in Punjab. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Saini said that the BJP had no plans to revive its former alliance with the SAD, despite a recent meeting between SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Anyone can meet the PM. There is no talk of an alliance. BJP is in alliance with the people of Punjab and it is going to form a government there,” Saini said.
Badal met Prime Minister Modi on August 7, the first publicly known meeting between the two leaders since the BJP and SAD ended their long-standing alliance in 2020 over the now-repealed farm laws.
The meeting has fuelled speculation about a possible rapprochement between the two parties ahead of the next Punjab Assembly elections. However, neither the SAD nor the BJP has disclosed what was discussed.A day after Sukhbir Singh Badal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) announced its support for the immediate implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill.
In a post on X, Badal said the party’s position was rooted in the Sikh Gurus’ teachings on equality, dignity and the rights of women. He also cited the reservation already provided for women in the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) as an example.
The party also backed the government’s proposal for a 50 percent increase in the number of seats in all states as part of the delimitation process, while calling for a “fair and equitable” exercise to ensure equal representation among states. The SAD said women’s reservation and delimitation should be implemented without delay.
