Shimla, July 2
Himachal Pradesh Education Minister Rohit Thakur on Thursday said that teachers for CBSE schools in the state will be recruited strictly on the basis of merit. He also announced that the promotion policy for school principals will be merit-based, with nearly 90 percent of the process already completed. Addressing the media in Shimla after a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri on various education-related issues, Thakur said the proposal could be placed before the state Cabinet if required. He added that the Cabinet Sub-Committee had agreed to merit-based appointments for CBSE teachers, and the report would now be submitted to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for a final decision.
The minister said the state is facing a shortage of teachers, and additional staff will be posted in schools with vacancies. He also clarified that the school merger would not be carried out in the middle of the academic session.
Thakur said the government plans to adopt several best practices from Jammu and Kashmir to strengthen the education system. These include introducing online school inspections, implementing special arrangements for remote areas, and establishing Vidya Samiksha
Kendras in every district to improve monitoring and governance. He also announced that meritorious students under the Ramanujan Student Digital Device Scheme will soon receive laptops through the Direct Benefit Transfer system. While acknowledging some technical issues during implementation, Thakur said the government remains committed to providing financial assistance of ₹16,000 to each eligible student.
