Shimla, May 18
Jai Ram Thakur, former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition in Himachal Pradesh, on Monday termed the BJP’s strong performance in the local body elections as a clear indication of growing public anger against the Congress government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
Addressing party leaders and workers during celebrations at the BJP headquarters “Deep Kamal” in Shimla, Jairam Thakur said the election results reflected people’s dissatisfaction with what he described as the Congress government’s failures, corruption, lawlessness, and “mafia rule.”
The BJP leader claimed that the public had become frustrated with false promises, anti-people decisions, and alleged poor governance under the present state government. He alleged that law and order in the state had deteriorated, corruption had weakened the administrative system, and mafia elements were receiving protection.
Jairam Thakur further stated that the civic body election results clearly showed that the people of Himachal Pradesh had begun distancing themselves from the Congress government and were preparing to remove it from power.
Targeting the Chief Minister, Thakur alleged that even members of the Congress government did not trust Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. He claimed the government had attempted to avoid holding local body elections and had conducted them only after court intervention.
He also said the Chief Minister appeared unsettled by the election outcome and should accept the public mandate gracefully.
Calling the results more than just an electoral victory for the BJP, Jairam Thakur said the outcome represented people’s trust in the BJP and their rejection of what he termed “politics of lies and propaganda.”
The former Chief Minister congratulated BJP workers, office-bearers, and supporters on the party’s performance in the elections and thanked the people of the state for their support. He expressed confidence that the BJP would continue to gain stronger public backing in future elections across the state.
