Argentina captain to make final appearance against Benin at Buenos Aires’ Monumental; 2022 World Cup-winning squad to be invited

After calling time on his international career, Lionel Messi will get one final chance to wear the Argentina shirt, with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirming his inclusion for a farewell friendly against Benin on October 6.

In an official video statement posted on the social media, AFA president Claudio Tapia said Messi had been invited to make the farewell appearance following discussions with Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni. Tapia said the match would give the Argentina captain the farewell he deserved.

The AFA, in its squad announcement, said Messi, Rodrigo De Paul and Giovani Lo Celso would take part in the October 6 friendly. It also said members of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad and their families would be invited to attend the occasion.

Messi announced his retirement from international football on August 31 this year, bringing his Argentina career to an end after more than two decades. The AFA subsequently included him for the October 6 fixture as part of the farewell plans.

The 39-year-old has made 207 appearances for Argentina and scored 125 goals, making him the country’s most-capped player and record goalscorer, according to FIFA. He led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title and also won the Copa América in 2021 and 2024.

Argentina will face Bolivia on September 30 and Burkina Faso on October 3 before taking on Benin in Buenos Aires. Messi is not expected to feature in the first two matches, according to the reported squad plans.

The October 6 fixture is expected to be Messi’s 208th and final appearance for Argentina, bringing the curtain down on his international career.
