Keylong, May 15
The district administration of Lahaul and Spiti has ordered the closure of National Highway 505 (Sumdo-Kaza-Gramphu/SKG route) for all vehicular movement until further notice, citing public safety concerns and deteriorating road conditions.
Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kiran Bhadana, issued the directive under Sections 30 and 34 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
According to information from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the NH-505 stretch between Losar and Gramphu remains blocked due to debris and ongoing restoration work. The Chandratal route via 108 RCC (GREF) is also closed. Continuous clearance and maintenance operations are underway, but the routes remain unsafe for traffic movement.
The administration stated that the decision was taken in view of potential risks to commuters and the fragile condition of the mountainous road network. Officials emphasized that vehicular movement will remain suspended until the road is fully restored and declared safe for travel.
The DDMA has urged all departments, police authorities, and travelers to strictly follow the advisory and avoid unnecessary movement on the route. Tourists, transport operators, and local residents have been advised to check official updates before planning any journey, as weather and road conditions remain highly unpredictable in the region.
