Two killed, two injured after car falls into gorge in Himachal’s Hamirpur

Hamirpur, May 4

An elderly couple was killed, and two others were injured after a car carrying four people plunged nearly 150 feet into a gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur district on Monday morning. The victims were on their way to attend a family function when the accident occurred.

The deceased have been identified as Ramesh Chand, 74, and his wife Santosh Kumari, 69. Police said Ramesh Chand died on the spot due to the impact, while Santosh Kumari succumbed to injuries during treatment at a hospital. The injured include the driver, Prithvi Chand, 64, and his wife, Saroj Kumari, 59, who are currently undergoing treatment.

According to officials, the accident took place on a link road between Kheri and Dhabriyana in the Barsar subdivision. Preliminary information suggests that the driver lost control of the vehicle near a water tank, causing it to fall into the deep gorge and leaving the car severely damaged.

Local residents rushed to the spot and began rescue efforts before police and administrative teams arrived. The injured were pulled out of the gorge with the help of villagers and shifted to a nearby hospital. One of the injured was later referred to the district hospital for further treatment.

Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. Authorities have also provided immediate financial assistance to the families of the deceased.
