The Ludhiana police have arrested a woman for allegedly throwing a stone at Dr BR Ambedkar’s statue at Jalandhar Bypass Chowk and breaking its protective glass. ADCP Sameer Verma confirmed that police registered an FIR against the accused and arrested her. Police are questioning her to establish the motive behind the incident.
The incident occurred under the Salem Tabri police station limits and triggered resentment among local residents. CCTV footage reportedly showed the woman throwing a stone at the statue. After examining the footage, the police took action against her.
ADCP Sameer Verma said police questioned the accused to determine why she damaged the glass. He added that police would also question her about an earlier incident involving alleged tampering with the Dr BR Ambedkar statue.
Chaudhary Yashpal, who reached the spot after learning about the incident, strongly condemned the act and demanded a thorough investigation. He described the incident as highly reprehensible and called for strict action against those responsible if the act was intended to disturb communal harmony.
The location had witnessed a similar controversy earlier when an unidentified person placed a garland on the statue. After that incident, police installed CCTV cameras at the site to monitor suspicious activity.
The police are investigating both incidents to establish the circumstances and determine whether the accused was involved in the earlier incident as well.
