Kangra, May 1

Former Union Minister and Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur on Friday criticised opposition parties for questioning the Election Commission during the West Bengal elections, alleging that such remarks are attempts to justify electoral setbacks, while also addressing issues related to campaign conduct and global energy challenges.

Speaking to reporters at Kangra Airport after attending a private event in Shahpur, Thakur said the Election Commission of India enjoys global recognition for conducting elections and should not be unfairly targeted. He alleged that political parties tend to raise questions about the poll body when they anticipate defeat.

Referring to the political situation in West Bengal, Thakur claimed that the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Congress are facing a difficult electoral outcome and are attempting to shift responsibility. He also criticised the state leadership, saying public sentiment reflects dissatisfaction with governance over the past several years.

On allegations related to strong room security, Thakur said adequate surveillance systems are in place and dismissed concerns over tampering with voting machines. He accused opposition workers of disrupting polling by targeting BJP symbols and intimidating party workers at booths. He further alleged that misinformation was spread among voters to create fear about cultural and social changes.

Thakur also spoke about the party’s internal election strategy, stating that meetings are held to motivate workers, ensure smooth polling operations, and respond effectively to challenges during the election process.

Commenting on international reactions, he referred to remarks by a Bangladeshi lawmaker and said these reflect concerns over political developments in West Bengal. He alleged that illegal infiltration and law-and-order issues have affected local communities in the state.

On global developments, Thakur highlighted rising concerns about energy security, citing supply chain disruptions and rising crude oil and gas prices. He said the Government of India has taken steps to cushion the impact on citizens, including tax adjustments, despite global pressures.

Thakur’s remarks come amid heightened political exchanges around the West Bengal elections, with the BJP continuing to target opposition parties on governance and electoral conduct, while also flagging broader economic challenges linked to global energy trends.
