Chandigarh, May 1
The Punjab BJP on Friday staged a mock Assembly session in Chandigarh, accusing the Aam Aadmi Party government led by Bhagwant Mann of failing on governance and suppressing opposition voices. The protest was organised in parallel with a special one day session of the Punjab Assembly convened by the state government.
The mock session, titled “Janta Ki Vidhan Sabha”, was held near the party office with senior leaders including Sunil Jakhar, Ashwani Sharma, Charanjit Singh Atwal, Tarun Chugh and Tikshan Sud in attendance. Atwal presided over the proceedings.
Addressing the gathering, Chugh alleged that the state government had failed across sectors and claimed that criminal elements were influencing governance. He also said the opposition was not being allowed to raise public issues in the Assembly, prompting the party to organise the parallel session.
Senior BJP leader Vijay Sampla criticised the government for its handling of labour related concerns, stating that the administration had not addressed the problems faced by workers over the past four years. He questioned the intent behind the special Assembly session, which the government said was dedicated to labourers.
The BJP’s two MLAs in the 117 member Punjab Assembly did not attend the official session on Friday. The state government had convened the one day sitting on the occasion of Labour Day, describing it as a tribute to workers and artisans.
The development comes amid recent political shifts in Punjab, adding to the ongoing confrontation between the ruling AAP and the opposition BJP.
The BJP maintained that it will continue to raise public issues through such platforms, while the state government has said its focus remains on governance and welfare measures.
