The Punjab Police on Saturday busted a cross-border drug smuggling module in Amritsar with the arrest of two persons and the recovery of 64.62 kg of heroin. Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the seizure marked a major success under the state government’s anti-drug campaign Yudh Nashian Virudh. He said the operation was carried out jointly by the Counter-Intelligence wing of Punjab Police and the State Special Operations Cell in Amritsar.

The arrested accused have been identified as Sarwan Singh alias Gujjar and Shamsher Singh alias Shera, both residents of Amritsar. Preliminary investigation has indicated that the accused were in contact with handlers based in Portugal and smugglers operating from Pakistan, the DGP said.

Police have registered a case at the State Special Operations Cell police station in Amritsar, and further investigation is in progress to uncover the wider network involved in the smuggling operation.

Officials said the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to curb cross-border drug trafficking and dismantle organized smuggling networks in the state.
