Chandigarh, April 9
Amritpal Singh Mehron, the main accused in the murder of Punjab-based social media influencer Kanchan Kumari alias Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, has been brought back to Punjab from the United Arab Emirates. Punjab Police secured his custody through the OFTEC cell of the Counter Intelligence Wing after authorities in the UAE handed over his custody to a police team following deportation.
Mehron, a 30-year-old resident of Moga and a self-styled Sikh radical leader, had fled to the United Arab Emirates soon after the killing. He was detained in the UAE in January before being deported to India. On February 7, a court in Bathinda declared him a proclaimed offender. Following the court order, the Punjab Police issued a Red Corner Notice through Interpol and circulated a lookout notice against him. Kanchan Kumari, popularly known on Instagram as Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, was strangled to death on June 9 2025. Her body was found in an abandoned car in the parking area of Adesh Hospital in Bathinda.
Her postmortem report confirmed the cause of death as strangulation. Three of Mehron’s alleged accomplices, Jaspreet Singh of Moga, Nimratjit Singh of Tarn Taran, and Ranjit Singh, had already been arrested earlier in connection with the case. During questioning, two of the arrested accused allegedly told police that they killed Kumari because they believed her social media content was immoral and offensive to Sikh sentiments.
Following the murder, a video surfaced online in which Mehron allegedly claimed that Kumari had been killed by his associates over her social media posts. He also allegedly warned other women influencers against posting what he called objectionable content. Mehron is also accused of threatening at least two other women social media influencers from Punjab. Further investigation is underway.
