Hamirpur, April 1

Two constables were suspended for negligence of duty after they allegedly kept the heroin they seized from a private hotel last week and demanded money from the accused, officials said on Wednesday.

The constables, who were posted at Bhoranj police station here, have been sent to police lines until further orders.

Officials said the suspended constables had seized chitta, or adulterated heroin, from two individuals at a private hotel last week. However, they did not register a case against the accused and instead kept the contraband in their possession.

They were also alleged to have demanded money from the two accused.

When Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Balbir Singh came to know about the incident, he suspended the constables, officials said.

Rajesh Sharma, Additional Superintendent of Police, who is investigating the matter, said that as soon as the matter was brought to his attention, he initiated an inquiry and took disciplinary action against the two constables after confirming their negligence in performing their duty.
