The sound of resistance at Panjab University found a lyrical echo as acclaimed singer, poet, and university alumnus Dr. Satinder Sartaaj joined students in their ongoing protest, expressing solidarity with their demand for timely Senate elections.
Known for his soulful verses and deep-rooted connection to Punjab’s culture, Sartaaj lent his voice — not through melody this time, but through moral support — to the “PU Bachao Morcha” (Save PU Front), a peaceful movement calling for the restoration of democratic processes at the 143-year-old institution.
In a heartfelt message posted on his official Instagram account, the artist wrote:
“Being a proud alumnus and ambassador of Panjab University, Chandigarh, I stand in heartfelt solidarity with the students who continue their peaceful movement for the timely announcement of the Senate elections.”
He welcomed the Union Ministry of Education’s recent decision to retain the existing Senate structure, calling it a positive step. But he urged that elections must now be held without further delay to restore “full legitimacy and participation” in the university’s governance.
“Let us reflect the democratic values and vibrant spirit that define our university,” he said. “Our campus has always been home to unanimity, harmony, and rich cultural values.”
Sartaaj’s intervention has added a powerful moral dimension to the movement, which has drawn support from students, faculty, and civil society groups across Punjab. His message resonates not only with Panjab University alumni but also with a generation that sees the campus as a cradle of democratic thought and cultural expression.
As he concluded, Sartaaj appealed for “an early and amicable resolution through dialogue and mutual respect,” saying that the voices of youth must continue to shape the “glorious heritage and future” of the university.
