The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) on Monday arrested Balwant Singh, Superintendent at the Punjab Roadways depot-1 in Jalandhar, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹40,000. According to an official spokesperson, the arrest was made as part of the state’s ongoing anti-corruption drive. The case originated from a complaint filed by a retired Punjab Roadways driver, who alleged that the accused had demanded ₹50,000 to process his pending overtime bills before retirement.
The complainant claimed that Singh eventually agreed to accept ₹40,000 and had already received ₹1.54 lakh in instalments while the case was pending before the labour court. After verifying the allegations, the Vigilance Bureau’s Jalandhar Range team set up a trap and caught the official red-handed while taking the money from the complainant in the presence of two government witnesses.
A case has been registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB Police Station, Jalandhar Range. Officials said Singh will be produced before court on Tuesday, and further investigation is underway.
