Shimla, September 25
Families of Yug Gupta, the child whose abduction and killing in 2016 shocked Himachal Pradesh, have staged fresh protests in Shimla after the state High Court commuted the death sentences of two convicts to life imprisonment and acquitted a third. On Tuesday, relatives and supporters marched from CTO to Sher-e-Punjab with black cloth tied over their eyes, symbolising what they called “blind justice”. They raised slogans against the court’s decision and vowed to continue their fight up to the Supreme Court.
Yug’s father, Vinod Gupta, said the ruling was incomprehensible. “Even after so many years, we have not received justice. The decision proves that the law is indeed blind. That is why we protested today with our eyes covered,” he said. He also questioned the acquittal of one of the accused, calling it unjustified.
The demonstrators accused the judiciary of failing to protect victims’ rights and pledged to intensify their agitation until, in their words, “Yug gets justice”.
The case has remained one of the most emotionally charged in Himachal Pradesh, where public anger has resurfaced following the latest court ruling.
