Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday asked whether India’s citizens wanted prime ministers or chief ministers to govern from jail, criticising leaders who refuse to resign after conviction. Speaking in Kochi of Kerala, Amit Shah said such behaviour was unimaginable when the Constitution was framed, noting earlier leaders stepped down before imprisonment. He also defended the government’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, calling it practical, with historical precedent, and said a joint committee would address concerns while ensuring development is not stalled.
Amit Shah further said, “When the Constitution was made, it was never imagined that such shameless people would exist who wouldn’t resign even after going to jail. Seventy years ago, several ministers and chief ministers resigned before imprisonment.” He also defended the government’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, calling it practical, with historical precedent, and said a joint committee would address concerns while ensuring development is not stalled. “It happened in 1961, 1970 and 2003. So, what is the problem now? Any challenge will be the same for all parties. Everyone will be on equal footing,” Shah said.
He also reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of India becoming the world’s leading nation, saying, “Until India reaches the very top, no one has the right to rest.”
