The central government has granted Z-category security cover by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta after she was attacked during a public grievance hearing on Wednesday, officials said. Delhi Police have registered a case of attempted murder against the accused, identified as Sakaria Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai, a resident of Rajkot, Gujarat. He was remanded to police custody for questioning.
Witnesses said the man approached Chief Minister Gupta during a Jan Sunvai hearing at her Civil Lines residence, pretending to carry papers, before slapping her and injuring her hand. Investigators said CCTV footage shows the suspect had visited her Shalimar Bagh residence a day earlier, raising suspicions that the assault was premeditated. Videos of the residence were also found on his phone. According to police sources, the accused was upset over a Supreme Court ruling ordering the removal of stray dogs from Delhi-NCR.
