India’s defence production hits record Rs 1.51 lakh crore

India’s defence production has reached a record high of ₹1,50,590 crore in the 2024-25 financial year, marking an 18% rise from last year’s output of ₹1.27 lakh crore and a 90% jump since 2019-20.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh credited the achievement to the Department of Defence Production, state-run enterprises and private industry, calling it a sign of a stronger domestic defence manufacturing base.

State-owned Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other PSUs contributed 77% of the total, while the private sector’s share rose to 23%, up from 21% the previous year. Production in DPSUs grew by 16%, and the private sector by 28%, driven by policy reforms, improved ease of doing business and a decade-long focus on indigenisation.

The push for self-reliance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative has also boosted defence exports, which hit an all-time high of ₹23,622 crore in FY25 — a 12% increase on last year.

Officials say continued reforms, greater private participation and rising export potential are expected to sustain the sector’s growth in the years ahead.
