CHANDIGARH/PATHANKOT, February 3
Punjab Police will install 2,300 CCTV cameras at 703 strategic locations along the state’s border, from Pathankot to Fazilka, to bolster its second line of defense and improve surveillance, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced on Monday. The project, costing Rs 45 crore, is part of a broader effort to enhance security across border areas.
DGP Yadav, who was in Pathankot for the inauguration of several police infrastructure projects, including a new Cyber Crime Police Station, emphasized that the CCTV network will cover key areas such as the Second Line of Defence and rural zones. The Police Command and Control Centre has been upgraded with 344 HD cameras, including Auto Number Plate Reader (ANPR) cameras. An additional 357 cameras will be installed to further improve surveillance.
In collaboration with the Indian Army and the Border Security Force (BSF), Yadav highlighted the importance of inter-agency coordination to address cross-border threats, including drone incursions and terrorism, and break the nexus of terrorists, gangsters, and drug smugglers operating under Pakistani ISI directives.
Yadav also commended the efforts of high-performing officers and personnel and interacted with local police, army, and BSF personnel during the ‘Bada Khana’ lunch in Pathankot, which fostered teamwork among the forces. The DGP later visited the BSF’s Shaheed Kamaljeet Singh Border Outpost (BOP) to review security measures.
