India’s Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, concluded a two-day visit to Oman on January 28, where he emphasized India’s vision for sustainable growth and mutual prosperity. During his visit, Goyal co-chaired the 11th India-Oman Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) with Oman’s Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, Qais bin Mohammed Al Yousef. The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, technology, renewable energy, and food security. Goyal highlighted investment opportunities, positioning India as an attractive destination for investments in renewable energy, technology, manufacturing, and food security. The two ministers also discussed the progress of the India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which is in advanced stages of negotiation. They agreed to expedite discussions to sign the agreement soon, aiming to further strengthen bilateral trade relations and boost two-way investments.
On the sidelines of the visit, both countries signed an amended protocol to the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), aligning it with international standards to simplify tax procedures and enhance cooperation on cross-border taxation. Goyal held further talks with senior Omani officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Sayyid Asa’ad bin Tarik Al Said and Finance Minister Sultan bin Salem Al Habsi. He also met with business leaders at a roundtable organised by the Indian Ambassador and participated in the India-Oman Joint Business Council (JBC) meeting hosted by the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Minister addressed students at the Royal Academy of Management, Oman, highlighting India’s growth and leadership role in global affairs. Goyal also visited key cultural landmarks, including the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, underscoring the deep cultural ties between the two nations. Goyal’s visit reinforced the growing India-Oman partnership, paving the way for expanded trade and investment cooperation.
