Chandigarh, May 21
A total of 7,622 candidates remain in the contest for Punjab’s upcoming local body elections after the completion of the nomination withdrawal process, officials said on Wednesday. Polling for 104 municipal bodies across the state is scheduled for May 26, with voting counting on May 29.
According to officials, 2,393 candidates withdrew their nominations after scrutiny, while 713 nomination papers were rejected. In total, 10,809 nominations had been filed for elections to 1,992 wards across municipal corporations, municipal councils, and nagar panchayats.
Officials also said that 80 candidates have already been elected unopposed.
The highest number of withdrawals was recorded in municipal councils, where 1,695 candidates pulled out of the race. This was followed by 386 withdrawals in municipal corporations and 312 in nagar panchayats.
The elections will be conducted in eight municipal corporations, including Mohali, Bathinda, Abohar, Barnala, Kapurthala, Moga, Batala, and Pathankot.
Apart from the municipal corporations, polling will also be held for 75 municipal councils and 21 nagar panchayats across Punjab.
Officials said elections to the Kharar municipal council have been deferred following directions issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
