Fazilka event at Asafwala War Memorial to honour soldiers and pay tribute to 232 martyrs of the 1971 India-Pakistan War

Chandigarh , August 18

As Raksha Bandhan approaches, Fazilka will host a unique program to honor the armed forces, with 1,100 women set to tie Rakhis on the wrists of 1,100 Indian Army and BSF personnel at the historic Asafwala War Memorial on August 23.

The poster for the ‘Rakhi Sarhad Ke Naam’ program was released in Chandigarh on Tuesday by Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria in the presence of Shaheedon Ki Samadhi Committee president Karan Gilhotra and members Navdeep Asija and Raman Khurana.

Gilhotra said the initiative would see women from Fazilka tying Rakhis to soldiers as a gesture of gratitude, respect and solidarity with personnel guarding the country’s borders. The program carries the message, “Honoring National Defense, Celebrating the Pride of Sisters.”

The venue holds special significance as the Asafwala War Memorial commemorates 232 Indian soldiers who were killed while defending the Fazilka sector during the 1971 India-Pakistan War.

“Tying Rakhis to soldiers at this historic memorial will be a tribute not only to our serving personnel but also to the brave hearts who laid down their lives in the service of the nation,” Asija said.

Serving Army and BSF personnel, veterans, families of martyrs, civilians, social organizations, schools, religious institutions and representatives of different sections of  the society are expected to participate in the program.

Governor Kataria will be the chief guest, while senior officers of the Army, BSF and civil administration will also attend the event.

The organizers said the program would give the traditional festival of Raksha Bandhan a wider national significance by bringing women and soldiers together in a gesture of gratitude and solidarity.

They said the event would also highlight the sacrifices of soldiers, the resilience of the families of the martyrs and the contribution of communities living in border areas.

The organizers added that the initiative aims to convey a message of patriotism, gratitude and national unity from Fazilka, reaffirming that while soldiers guard the nation’s borders, our citizens stand firmly with them.
