Couple Dies After Allegedly Consuming Poisonous Substance; Seven-Page Note Mentions ₹36 Lakh Abroad Fraud

A couple died after allegedly consuming a poisonous substance at a PG in Zirakpur, reportedly distressed over an alleged ₹36 lakh fraud committed on the pretext of sending them abroad.

The deceased have been identified as Gagandeep Kaur and her husband Hakam Singh. According to preliminary information, the couple’s condition deteriorated after they allegedly consumed a poisonous substance. They were rushed to a hospital, where both died during treatment.

Police reportedly recovered a seven-page alleged suicide note from the spot. The note contains allegations that the couple had been cheated of ₹36 lakh after being promised assistance in going abroad.

According to the alleged note, the couple had paid ₹18 lakh each, amounting to ₹36 lakh, to a person they trusted. Hakam Singh reportedly alleged that the person was his former schoolmate and that their old acquaintance led the couple to trust him.

The couple had reportedly been preparing to travel abroad and allegedly made payments in different installments after being assured that the process would be completed. However, they were allegedly neither sent abroad nor refunded their money.

The prolonged delay in recovering the money and the failure of their plans to move abroad reportedly caused the couple significant mental distress.

After receiving information about the incident, police reached the spot and took the alleged suicide note into custody. The note is reportedly being examined through forensic and handwriting analysis.

Police are also recording statements from the family members and investigating the alleged ₹36 lakh fraud and the role of the person named in the note.

Officials said they would verify the allegations in the note during the investigation. Further action will be taken based on the probe’s findings.
