The Supreme Court, on Monday, questioned the Andhra Pradesh government over the Tirupati Prasadam controversy, remarking that “at least the Gods should be kept away from politics.” The court expressed concern over the government’s decision to go public with allegations that substandard ghee, allegedly containing animal fat, was used in the preparation of Tirupati laddus, despite the lack of clarity on the issue.
A Bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan addressed the premature claims made by the Andhra Pradesh administration, emphasizing the absence of conclusive proof. The Supreme Court questioned the necessity of making such accusations public when an investigation had already been ordered by the state, according to the Delhi based news outlet Bar and Bench. The court inquired if the government had any definitive evidence to support claims that adulterated ghee had been used at the Sri Venkateswara temple.
The Supreme Court also further pointed out that the ghee sample had been rejected in reports, adding, “What was the need to go to the press when you yourself initiated an investigation?” The court’s remarks highlight concerns about mixing politics with religious sentiments and the possible consequences of publicizing unverified allegations.
